Attributes are extra fields your administrator has defined for your business — things M-Power doesn't have a standard field for, such as Requires Ladder on an order, Site Induction Number on a contact, or Region on a company. Each attribute has a type (text, number, date, or a pick-list), and your administrator controls which kinds of record it appears on.
1. Where to find attributes
| Record | Where the attributes are |
|---|---|
| Quotes, Orders, Purchase Orders, Invoices, Despatches, Leads | Open the document and expand the More section near the bottom of the page, then click the Attributes tab (alongside Notes and Advanced). |
| Companies | Open the company and go to the Profile tab. The Attributes box sits in the right-hand column, under Statistics and Document Level Reminders. |
| Contacts and Addresses | Edit the contact or address from the company's Contacts & Addresses tab. The attributes appear at the bottom of the edit window. (They don't appear while adding a new contact or address — save it first, then edit it.) |
| Items (products and materials) | Open the item's details window — the attributes are at the bottom of the Details tab. |
| Projects | Open the project — the attributes are at the bottom of the project details panel. |
2. Entering values
Every attribute saves as soon as you change it — there is no separate Save button. The field flashes green when the save succeeds and red if something was rejected.
| Attribute type | How it works |
|---|---|
| Text | A free-text box, up to 255 characters. Click away (or press Tab) to save. |
| Number | Accepts numbers only, including decimals and negatives. Anything that isn't a valid number is rejected before it saves. |
| Date | A date picker. Pick the date; it saves immediately. |
| List | A dropdown of options your administrator maintains. Pick one; choose the blank entry to clear it. |
| Multi-select | Like a list, but you can pick several options. Each choice appears as a small tag — click a tag's × to remove it. |
Clearing a value
Delete the text (or deselect every option) and click away. A cleared attribute simply has no value — it will show empty next time you open the record.
3. Attributes and quote conversion
When a quote is converted to an order, attribute values can come across with it. Whether they do is controlled per attribute by your administrator (Copy on convert):
- Only attributes that apply to both quotes and orders are eligible.
- The attribute must have Copy on convert switched on.
- If the order already has a value for that attribute, the existing value is kept — conversion never overwrites it.
This works the same whichever way the quote is converted, including conversions a customer makes through the client portal.
4. Frequently asked questions
Who decides which attributes exist?
Your site administrator, from Settings → Document Attributes. If you need a new field, ask them — no M-Power involvement is required.
Why can I see an attribute on quotes but not on orders?
Each attribute is switched on per record type. That one has been enabled for quotes only — your administrator can add orders to it at any time.
My value didn't save and the field flashed red — why?
The value was rejected — most commonly a non-numeric entry in a number field, or a date in the wrong format. A message explains the reason. Correct the value and try again; if it keeps failing, refresh the page and retry before contacting support.
An attribute disappeared — where did my data go?
Your administrator has either deactivated the attribute or removed it from that record type. Deactivating hides the attribute but keeps every stored value, so it reappears intact if it is reactivated. If it was deleted outright, the administrator was warned how many records held values before confirming.
Do attributes appear on printed documents or the client portal?
Not yet. Attributes are currently for internal screens only; report and portal exposure are planned separately.
